Central Bank Gold Statistics: July 2024

Central banks have shown an ongoing commitment to accumulating gold in recent months. While the overall level of reported demand has cooled as the gold price has continued to rally to new record highs, it has nonetheless remained positive.

India’s gold market update: Import duty reduction, a catalyst for demand

The reduction of gold’s import duty brought domestic gold prices lower 6% m/m, with y-t-d gains now at 10%. The lower import duty has also reportedly boosted consumer demand ahead of the festive season. In turn, strong demand pushed the domestic gold price to a premium relative to the landed price following five months of discounts. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) continued with its consistent but measured approach to buying gold. Gold ETFs saw substantial inflows in July on the back of adjustments to the treatment of long-term capital gains. Gold imports also maintained their momentum in July.

Why bitcoin isn’t the new gold

Over the past five years, gold and bitcoin have provided strong returns. There is no question that bitcoin has offered significant upside (and sometimes downside) - but at what cost as compared to gold?

China’s gold market in July: wholesale demand remained weak while ETFs inflows continued

In July, China’s wholesale gold demand remained weak and the local gold price premium trended down further. However, gold ETFs saw their eighth consecutive monthly inflows, pushing the total assets under management and holdings to record highs. And China’s official gold holdings remained unchanged.

Indian gold import duties reduced to the lowest level in over a decade

Gold import duty was cut by more than half. Long-term capital gains tax on gold has been adjusted down and the holding period decreased. Profits on gold ETFs and mutual funds will no longer be taxed at the short-term capital gains rate if held for at least 12 months. Despite some potential short-term disruptions, we expect the combined effects of these changes to add at least 50t to gold demand in H2 2024.

India’s gold market update: demand takes a breather following festival rush

China’s gold market in May: gold ETFs continued to attract attention while consumption cooled

In May, China’s wholesale gold demand fell as gold jewellery consumption and bar and coin sales cooled. Meanwhile, the local central bank didn’t report any gold purchase during the month. But the bright spot came from the gold ETF market which extended the inflow streak to six months.

Central bank gold buying picks up in April

The rapid rise in the gold price during March raised  several questions. One of these was whether central banks – whose demand has been posited as a key reason for the recent rally – would change their gold buying behaviour in response.

India’s gold market update: festival acts as a catalyst for demand

International and domestic gold prices moderated from the April peaks but ended the month with gains following the notable price rise of March. After a weak March and April, there was resurgence in gold demand around the Akshaya Tritiya festival. Domestic gold prices continue to trade at a discount in relation to the international prices, but the discounts have narrowed from a month ago. Meanwhile, the RBI added to its gold reserves in April and gold ETFs witnessed outflows for the first time in 12 months.

Higher gold price eases pressure on producer margins

In Q4’23 gold miners’ global average all-in sustaining costs (AISC) rose again, up 2% q/q to US$1,342/oz as persistent cost inflation and a tight labour market continued to influence on-site operating costs. There is a silver lining however, because the rate of increase is slowing and the higher gold price has eased pressure on producer margins.
