A gold discovery that is described as "encouraging" has been made at the Castle Minerals Kandia gold project in north-west Ghana.

Previously unknown areas of artisanal gold workings were discovered during the recent reconnaissance field mapping programme.

Mike Ivey, managing director of Castle Minerals, said: "This is a very encouraging discovery; in its own right it represents a major new exploration target for sediment hosted gold mineralisation that is considered capable of hosting large gold deposits."

He went on to add that the finding reinforces the potential that the unexplored 12,000 square kilometre gold project offers, stating it is "remarkable" that it had not been recognised until now.

The largest group of gold workings is believed to be over a 400-metre strike length, which provides the company with an immediate target for drilling at the site.

A sampling and mapping programme is now underway at the Kandia project to assess the regional trend of the gold mineralisation.

Castle Minerals currently has ten different gold projects spanning a 10,000 kilometre square area in Ghana, west Africa.
