Thursday, 15th April 2010 (796 views) Gold output in the west African country of Burkina Faso is expected to nearly double this year.Speaking to Reuters, mines minister Abdoulaye Kader Cisse said production could reach 22 tonnes in 2010, compared with 11.7 tonnes last year and 5.5 tonnes in 2008. Gold has overtaken cotton to become Burkina Faso's most valuable export and the opening of new mines has helped to increase output in recent times. "Since January 2010, gold has not only become our country's most important export, but the outlook for the sector is also very promising," Mr Cisse commented. According to the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), proven and probable gold reserves in Burkina Faso soared 13-fold to 7.2 million ounces between 2000 and 2009. Four gold mines were commissioned and another two were under construction during this period. The PDAC says Burkina Faso could become the fourth biggest producer of gold in Africa this year.
