A commemorative gold coin has been issued in order to mark the announcement of the 2010 Capital of Islamic Culture - the city of Tarim in Yemen.

At the inauguration ceremony for the gold coin, Mohamed Abu Bakr al-Maflahi, Yemen's minister of culture, said that the piece has been designed in the hope of enabling future generations to remember this culturally-significant event.

He stated that Yemeni people and worldwide numismatic collectors alike will be able to keep the coins for sentimental value, while museums may wish to display them in exhibitions to mark the occasion.

On the front of the gold piece the logo of Tarim is printed, while on the reverse, a depiction of the Central Bank of Yemen and the date of issuance will be featured.

Writing for Numismaster, Richard Giedroyc recently advised that gold coins have been a store of value for investors since ancient times.
