Thursday, 18th February 2010 (1347 views) A 27-item strong hoard of gold coins has been unearthed in the Thoothukudi district of southern India, it has been revealed.Local women discovered the gold pieces in a mud pot when they were farming a field in the village of Vilathikulam Taluk, Express Buzz reports. The gold coins weigh between three and four grams apiece and are each inscribed with Arabic lettering. While the historical significance of the items is not yet known, they have since been passed on to the district's archaeological department, which is in the process of assessing the numismatic pieces. The women who discovered the coins initially split the gold between them but the police have since confiscated the items so that they can be taken away for investigation. Last weekend (February 13th) thousands of visitors flocked to the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on-Trent in order to catch a glimpse of Britain's largest ever discovery of Anglo Saxon gold, which is currently being exhibited at the museum.
