A potential gold rush could be about to take place at the foot of the Ben Lui mountain in the southern highlands of Scotland, according to reports.

Outdoor activity website Grough has stated that an Australian gold mining company has submitted an application to mine for the precious metal at the Cononish site, when has stood empty for the past ten years.

The mine is currently owned by Scotgold Resources, which has estimated that there is somewhere in the region of 154,000 ounces of gold at the site.

According to the Grough, this could mean that the gold reserves located in the area have an overall value of more than £100 million.

While various bodies, including the Ben Lui national reserve and Scottish Natural Heritage, need to give the project the go-ahead, it has been estimated that the creation of the gold mine could generate up to 60 jobs in the area.

The Guardian has previously stated that the Cononish site is one of the only workable gold mines in the whole of the UK.
