Work has started on a project that could bring a gold mine in Manitoba, Canada, back into use.

Tartan Lake is located within the Flin Flon greenstone belt. Between 1987 and 1989, it was an active gold mine and its owner, St Eugene Mining Corporation, is now looking to evaluate the potential for restarting operations and carrying out a resource estimate.

A mining engineer and geologist have been recruited to compile and digitise available technical data on the site in order to support a development plan for the mine.

St Eugene noted Tartan Lake already has a gold concentrate capable of processing 440 million tonnes a day, large intact, related infrastructure and access to established mining blocks.

The company said the property represents an opportunity to identify additional ore and to expand on the historic gold production from a number of zones adjacent to the existing mine and the nearby Amisk Lake site.

St Eugene was established in 1939 and became a publicly-traded company in 2005.
