Monday, 8th February 2010 (877 views) A range of rare gold artefacts from China's ancient era has gone on show at the National Palace Museum in Taiwan.The exhibition, entitled Gold and Glory: The Wonders of Khitan from the Inner Mongolia Museum Collection, opened to the public on Saturday (February 6th) and will run until May 16th. According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, the highlight of the display is a gold mask discovered in the tomb of a princess from the Liao dynasty, which ruled Manchuria - now the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region - between the tenth and 12th centuries. Gold has been used throughout history in a range of other countries for funerary purposes, including Egypt, Peru and Italy. Some 115 artefacts from the Liao tomb and graves belonging to other Khitan nomads are on show at the exhibition in total, all of which have never before been displayed outside of mainland China. "The public in Taiwan could gain an understanding of Liao culture through this new exhibit," Chou Kung-shin, director of the National Palace Museum, commented.
