Investing in gold coins can prove to be a "fun endeavour" for people who want to explore more than gold bullion, it has been suggested.

Allen Rowe, writing for the Nevada Appeal, states that one particularly rare range of gold coins can be a good choice for people who are looking to collect, due to the fact that they are extremely scarce.

Carson City gold coins were all struck in the Nevada area but there were just two million gold pieces minted in the area's 20-year history.

An 1870 $20 gold coin from Carson City recently sold at auction for $200,000 (£128,000), showing that as well as being valuable because of their collectability, these items can also prove to be a wise investment choice.

Finance website Viploan recently advised that more people are choosing to purchase gold coins than ever before, with the precious metal becoming "a prized and popular investment".
