Four gold ingots found in the shipwreck of the SS Central America sold for high prices at an auction held in California last week.

According to CoinLink, Heritage Auction Galleries's Long Beach Signature Sale saw the Harris Marchand gold ingot, which weighs 55.05 ounces, sell for $172,500 (£110,789) on February 5th.

The Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot, meanwhile, weighs 48.65 ounces and was sold for $103,500.

Elsewhere, the highest bid for the 38.76-ounce Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot stood at $97,750, while a Justh & Hunter bar - described as being of a small to medium size by Heritage Auction Galleries - fetched a price of $74,750.

The SS Central America sank in 1857 while journeying to New York with a cargo worth millions of dollars at the time and hundreds of dollars today.

According to Heritage Auction Galleries, the four ingots it sold last week were cast by assayers looking to bring the fruits of the California Gold Rush to the east coast of the US.
