The Royal Canadian Mint will showcase a number of rare gold coins from its history at a special pavilion during this year's Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

It will display the mint's million-dollar gold coin - which was first unveiled in 2007 and weighs 100kg - in a special Gold Room that will explore the organisation's involvement in the Canadian gold sector.

Visitors will also be able to handle a 400-ounce gold bar and view a wide range of other products made from the precious metal.

In addition, a showcase will explain how the Royal Canadian Mint struck the gold and other medals for the Winter Olympics and allow collectors to swap Vancouver 2010 coins minted especially for the Games.

"The mint is excited to welcome visitors to our pavilion, where they will find unique attractions, interactive technology and the opportunity to get behind the scenes," commented Ian Bennett, president and chief executive of the Royal Canadian Mint.
