Gold bullion is "the world's lowest risk investment", according to one commentator.

Writing on Commodity Online, Stewart Thomson said the precious metal remains the safest bet for investors because of the stated policies of a number of central banks, including the US Federal Reserve.

Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Fed, has a five-point plan to fight deflation that includes "revaluing gold higher" and creating large amounts of money, which will hit the value of the US dollar, he noted.

Furthermore, Mr Thomson said a number of central banks across Asia are in the process of ten-year gold buying programmes in a bid to boost their own reserves of the precious metal.

In October, economist Kent Ninomiya told Stylish magazine that bullion should be the investment of choice for those looking to put their money into gold for the first time.

He added that one-ounce bullion coins such as the US Mint's American Eagle and the South African Krugerrrand are one of the easiest ways to own gold, as they are used by every dealer.
