Wednesday, 25th November 2009 (2039 views) A recent auction of European decorative arts held in New York saw buyers put in high bids for a number of gold pieces.The sale - which was held by Christie's yesterday (November 24th) at the Rockefeller Plaza - brought a $37,500 (£22,470) final bid for a pair of gold vases crafted in Paris in 1820. A unique gold 1745 Louis XV ormolu striking cartel clock, featuring Hercules dressed in the skin of the Nemean lion while killing the lion of Mount Cithaeron, also sold for $17,500 - almost double the original high estimate of $9,000. Other gold items sold at the auction included jewellery boxes, candlestick holders and lamps made for wealthy buyers in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Christie's is to hold a series of auctions featuring an array of luxury and antique gold jewellery from around the world in Hong Kong and New York next month.
