Two rare gold rings dating back to the medieval period have been sold at auction.

A ring made of a twisted gold rope dating back to the 11th or 12th century fetched a price of £1,875 at the Jewels of South Kensington sale held by Christie's yesterday (November 19th).

The auctioneer says it is possible that the ring could be Anglo-Saxon, as this type of jewellery was popular from the early Saxon period onwards and burials from the time suggest that a number of these rings were occasionally worn on one hand.

Meanwhile, a gold posy ring from the 1500s featuring lozenge-shaped engraved decoration and an engraved interior hoop went for £1,750 at the sale.

Earlier this month, a gold medieval ring found by a metal detectorist in Sarn, Wales was declared treasure by Powys coroner Peter Maddox.

The ring was found to be at least ten per cent gold and was dated to between 1580 and 1600, the Western Mail reports.
