Wednesday, 18th November 2009 (1851 views) Gold production in South Africa registered an increase between the second and third quarters of 2009, according to new figures.Statistics from the country's Chamber of Mines show that output rose by five per cent from 51,634kg in the second quarter to 54,110kg in the following three-month period. Production by members of the Chamber of Mines saw a rise of 3.4 per cent to 44,140kg between the two quarters. However, overall South African gold output fell 2.9 per cent year-on-year, while production by member firms also dropped by 3.9 per cent on an annual basis, Mining Weekly reports. The Chamber of Mines was founded in 1889. Earlier this year, it announced that South African gold output for 2008 totalled 220,551kg. Its member firms include African Rainbow Minerals and Pamodzi Gold. South Africa was the second biggest gold producer in the world last year behind China, according to the US Geological Survey.
