Gold coins were in high demand at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo held over the weekend, according to one industry figure.

Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics said overall activity was strong thanks recent rises in the price of gold and a heightened interest in coins among collectors.

She added that all types of gold coins seemed to be selling briskly at the event, with levels of interest similar to the peaks last seen in 1980.

Ms Sperber noted that demand for gold coins at the Stacks 74th Anniversary Coin Sale, which was held before the main Baltimore Expo from November 9th to November 11th, was also "much stronger than had been anticipated".

In Legend's case, the dealer sold over $100,000 (£59,336) of coins on Saturday November 14th alone. It also has a $250,000 sale pending for a single coin.

Among the gold pieces sold by the firm was a "gorgeous" 1908 $10, Ms Sperber said.

The Baltimore Expo ran from Thursday November 12th to Sunday November 15th.
