A technology enabling jewellers to personalise gold jewellery by printing photos on individual pieces has been developed in Myanmar.

In what is thought to be a first for the country, the new machinery is capable of using traditionally photographic printing methods to transfer images to the precious metal, the Myanmar Times reports.

Jewellery producer U Shwe Kyi explained that the technology is already popular in Thailand, which prompted him to study the process and test it on his own gold lockets.

He now uses a special machine made in Myanmar to transfer photos to gold jewellery.

"We use the printing machine to put the photo on gold instead of on paper. The key is the chemicals used in the photo," he commented.

Myanmar is known for its craftspeople that specialise in embroidery using gold thread, as well as the manufacture of gold foil.

The country's gold leaf producers are mostly based in the city of Mandalay.
