A recent fundraising event for the Keep A Child Alive US charity saw actress Halle Berry purchase a spectacular gold necklace to raise money for the organisation.

The charity generates funds to help provide medical care and support to African and Indian families affected by HIV and Aids.

Its recent jewellery auction in New York saw Berry put in a successful $40,000 (£24,212) bid for an 18-c gold, blue kyanite and ruby necklace co-designed by singer Alicia Keys, one of the founders of Keep A Child Alive, for the Barber's Daughters line of jewellery.

Keys wore the necklace - which is inscribed with one of her quotes - during the event, People magazine reports.

Other celebrity ambassadors for Keep A Child Alive include TV chef Padma Lakshmi and supermodel Iman.

The charity currently has more than 45,000 people under its care, including over 4,000 children and family members on antiretroviral drug treatment.
