Visitors to the Bank of England Museum in London have the opportunity to get their hands of a genuine gold bar - almost.

The Telegraph reports that holding a genuine 13kg gold bar - albeit one "encased in a heavily protected box" - is one of the highlights of the museum, which is housed within the Bank in Threadneedle Street.

Families can also take in a gallery on the history of inflation featuring gold bars of the Roman Empire, which illustrate the world's first period of rising prices.

Elsewhere, the museum houses an extensive collection of coins produced by the Royal Mint since 1694, the year of the Bank's foundation, including a 1911 gold sovereign featuring a design of St George slaying the dragon.

Other items of interest include the pikes and muskets once employed by the Bank's guards, rare bank notes and Roman pottery and mosaics discovered in 1930 during refurbishment work.
