Author and painter Kit Williams has been reunited with a gold amulet that sparked a massive treasure hunt three decades ago thanks to efforts made by the BBC.

His Masquerade children's book, published in 1979, contained clues to where the artefact was buried, catching the public's imagination and prompting a nationwide search for the treasure.

It was found in 1982 and was sold at auction six years later for £31,900 to an overseas buyer. Last month, Mr Williams made a plea for the current owner of the amulet to come forward so that the item could be put on public display.

The owner heard an interview that the artist gave to BBC Radio Four while she was passing through London and was put in touch with those in charge of making a BBC Four documentary about Mr Williams.

"It's just so emotional to be reunited with an old friend after 30 years - I never thought we'd meet again," Mr Williams said.

The Golden Hare is made from 22-c gold and is thought to have been worth £4,000 at the time of Masquerade's publication.
