Ancient gold artefacts from Afghanistan recovered after years of civil unrest are among items to be shown at an exhibition in Canada.

The touring collection Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures is to make its only Canadian stop in Ottawa this autumn.

Museum of Civilization curator Fredrik T Hiebert said: "I am honoured to be part of the effort to share these treasures with audiences around the world and ultimately to enhance the understanding of Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage."

Over 200 pieces from Kabul's National Museum will be showcased in the exhibition including ancient jewellery, sculpture and ceramics.

Items from the Bactrian gold hoard that were rediscovered in secret Afghan bank vaults will feature prominently in the display.

A group of Afghans had concealed the valuables during the reign of the Taliban before they were unveiled again by the current president Hamid Karzai in 2003.

Discovered at the archaeological site Tillya Tepe, the hoard includes a golden ram ornament dating from the first century BC.
