Gold is well-known as a prized treasure in India - but it is not just popular with Indians who live in the country.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, members of the Indian diaspora in the US - those who moved from India to settle permanently in America - still harbour a love of gold that is passed down from generation to generation.

Gold is revered by many Indians for its religious connotations as well as for its financial value - Hindus who follow the teachings within the Rigveda sacred text believe that the universe was created from a single golden egg.

Jagdish Singh, an Indian resident of Hampton Roads, Virginia, told the Virginian-Pilot: "From time immemorial in India, gold is considered to be the safest investment."

Indian families typically make large gifts of gold to daughters as wedding presents, with this jewellery then passed on to the next generation.

Syed Ismail, another Indian Hampton Roads citizen, said that families commonly give up to 20 or 30 ounces of gold as a bridal gift.
