Castle Gold has revealed that a record amount of gold was produced at its El Castillo mine in the first quarter of 2009, despite "challenges" faced in the period.

The Mexican site saw output of more than 7,600 ounces from January to March.

President and chief executive of Castle Gold Thomas Atkins said that difficulty came from the fact that old mining equipment was being phased out.

This was because of a new mining contract being signed, with the anticipation that new equipment would be brought in as a result.

However, Mr Atkins described the period as "another good quarter" for both the mine and the firm as a whole.

"Mining rates and gold production at El Castillo continued to increase," he remarked.

In addition to the wholly-owned Mexican project, Castle Gold has a 50 per cent stake in the El Sastre mine in Guatemala and is exploring at La Fortuna, also located in Mexico.
