Tuesday, 26th May 2009 (2929 views) A gold coin produced to commemorate soldiers killed in war has gone on sale.Weighing 0.5g, the 99.99 per cent pure gold coin measures 11mm in diameter and has been limited to 25,000 pieces. Valued at $1 (62p) in the currency of the Pacific island of Palau, the piece has been produced by Coin Invest Trust as a "unique reminder of the debt paid by soldiers who put service to country above self". It is shaped to resemble a poppy, which has traditionally been used as a symbol of remembrance for the armed forces that have been killed in the line of duty and to raise money for those affected by the death of soldiers since 1921. Earlier this month it was announced that a new gold coin produced to mark the 20th anniversary of elections in the Polish city of Gdansk is to go on sale. The city's coat of arms features on the obverse of the gold piece, while the reverse features former president Lech Walesa.
