Purchasing collectible gold coins is an ideal way of investing in gold, an expert has suggested.

Speaking to Fox Business, Scott Travers stated that such items tend to hold their value better than bullion or futures and so will be more favourable if the price of the precious metal declines.

He urged prospective buyers to carry out thorough research when investing in gold coins, noting that for US puchasers it is important to select pieces that are certified by either the Professional Coin Grading Service or the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation.

And once the gold has been purchased, Mr Travers urged owners not to keep it in a bank's safety deposit box, noting that doing so "goes against the idea of using gold as an insurance policy".

Head of investment at Barclays Stockbrokers recently advised investors to consider purchasing shares in gold mining companies, noting that these as seen as "offering great value" during the recession.
