India's post office is to offer 0.5g of free gold to buyers who purchase 10g of the precious metal as part of a limited promotion, it has emerged.

According to the Times of India, the offer is in place until the end of the month and will give residents in the country an added incentive to purchase the commodity.

Chief post master general M P Rajan told the news source that gold is in great demand across India, with the metal selling scheme proving popular with buyers.

The announcement follows the news that India Post has sold nearly 10kg of gold coins since it introduced the offer in October of last year.

P N Mishra of the firm told Commodity Online that sales of the coins, which range in from 0.5g and 8g in weight, have been "impressive" since the initiative began and the scheme is set to be rolled out into rural areas.
