The part that gold plays in New Year's Eve celebrations in Peru has been highlighted.

According to the Living in Peru website, it is traditional to toast the New Year with a glass of champagne containing a piece of gold jewellery.

The site noted that the preferable item to use for this ritual is a gold ring, although it warned people to take care not to swallow the jewellery.

New Year's Eve traditions vary from country to country, but overall it is a universal time for celebration, the article claimed.

One other tradition it outlined was to stand in a doorway and throw 12 coins over the left shoulder for each strike of the clock at midnight.

The news provider said this is believed to bring the person financial prosperity.

In Chinese tradition, it is considered good luck to decorate a home in red and golden colours on New Year's Day as gold is thought to represent wealth and happiness, notes the Family Culture site.
