An anonymous donor has gifted a coin worth an estimated $335 (£218) to a local Salvation Army branch in Illinois.

The Urbana/Champaign News-Gazette reports that a valuable Austrian four ducat gold coin was pushed into a donation kettle at the County Market.

Champaign County Salvation Army claims that it marks the fifth consecutive year that the organisation has received a gold coin from an anonymous donor and the type of coin has been different each year.

According to kettle and volunteer co-ordinator Melanie Hall, the coin will be sold and the proceeds of the sale added to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle funds.

A one ounce US Mint American Buffalo $50 coin was also anonymously donated in a Salvation Army kettle in north-east Kansas and is estimated to be worth at least $1,000, while the Sioux City Journal states that a $5 1906 Liberty gold coin worth an estimated $300 to $350 was deposited at a Salvation Army red kettle by an unknown person.
