Wednesday, 26th November 2008 (745 views) A Faberge enamel and gold vanity case from the 19th century has sold for over £180,000 at a London auction house.The item, thought to date from as far back as 1896, was on offer as part of the Russian Works of Art event being held by Christie's. It featured a design made up of three notes on a treble clef within an oval and trellis border on the lid, with two hinged compartments and a mirror in the interior. Originally estimated to fetch from £150,000 to £200,000, it sold for £181,250, including the buyer's premium. Other notable items featured in the sale included a gold-gilded St George's Cavalry sword from 1915 owned by the grand duke Nicholas Nikolaevich, also known as Nicholas the Younger. Displaying a Schaff and Son stamp, the sword's hilt is adorned with gold and the Russian inscription of "For Bravery" is engraved on the side bars.
