Nanotechnology firm Midatech has announced the formation of a subsidiary that will work on creating drug delivery applications using gold nanoparticles.

PharMida will be based in Basel, Switzerland, to develop a "strong portfolio" of gold nanotechnology-based developments to be licensed in the future.

It will be headed by Professor Fritz Buhler as chairman and Dr Jan Mous as chief executive officer.

The company's founder, Professor Thomas Rademacher, said it will be a "great privilege" to work with the pair, who bring an "unrivalled level of expertise and experience" to the firm.

"This is an extremely important step in the development of Midatech and its nanoparticle technology," he added.

In other scientific news, a team of German researchers from Ruhr University have used gold to work on a way of creating germ-fighting contact lenses.

They grew 'biofilms' on a layer of gold to produce a surface that was totally resistant to proteins, a development that is "highly desirable" for contact lens manufacturers.
