Gareth Thomas and Gareth Edwards, two Welsh international rugby stars, have been presented with a pair of gold cufflinks to commemorate their efforts for the Celtic nation's favourite sport.

Clogau Gold was commissioned by Welsh Rugby Union to create the pieces and both Thomas and Edwards were presented with the gifts by managing director of Clogau Ben Roberts before the Welsh team faced South Africa at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Mr Roberts told Retail Jewellery about the significance of the items for both the company and the players.

"Presenting them with these two exclusive pieces, each containing some of our rare Welsh gold, expresses our support for everything they have done throughout their careers and in the future," he said.

Other sports stars that have recently received commemorative gold gifts are the members of the Boston Celtics basketball team.

Designed by Balfour, gold rings thought to be worth $30,000 (£19,500) were presented to the players last month.
