Historic gold jewellery on show at Walters Museum

Thursday, 30th October 2008 (557 views)

The Walters Art Museum in the Baltimore, Maryland, is playing host to a historic jewellery collection, including a number of important gold pieces.

Scheduled to run until January 2009, the exhibition includes a Greek gold bracelet from the first century BC set with precious stones and discovered in a tomb in the present-day Ukraine.

Entitled Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewellery, the show features a special display of finger rings, worn throughout the centuries and used as tokens of love, death, faith, mourning and power.

According to the Walters Art Museum, "the allure of gold and gems and the desire to design objects of adornment have remained constant throughout history and across a spectrum of cultures".

The exhibition demonstrates the evolution of techniques used to craft gold jewellery from the ancient Egyptians to the present day and some of the items on display have never been on show before.
