A gold mining firm has joined forces with two Rotary clubs in Nova Scotia to raise money for good causes in Africa, it has been revealed.

Employees of Etruscan Resources - which is based in the Canadian province but owns two gold mines in west Africa – wanted to help people whose plight they witnessed while on location.

So the company teamed up with the Dartmouth and Wolfville Rotary clubs to carry out some fundraising, according to the Chronicle Herald.

Vice president and chief operating officer Donald Burton told the paper: "It's important for us to be responsible and accountable in the countries where we work."

Money raised from the collaboration has gone towards health improvements and a new classroom for a school in Bossey Bangou, Niger.

This country is among the poorest in the world, with widespread poverty and starvation, particularly between May and September when there are droughts, Oxfam states.
