Ballarat Goldfields is set to commence exploration at Victoria Park in Australia, it has been reported.

The company believes that plenty of gold remains at the site after 800,000 ounces were mined from quartz reefs during a past gold rush, according to the Ballarat Courier.

It is aiming to discover new gold sources in the western area of the project, after increasing production in the eastern part of the operation.

Geology manager at the firm Charles Carnie told the news provider that this action is necessary to bolster future productivity as the current mine has a life of about 20 years.

He remarked: "If we make a reasonable-sized gold discovery at Ballarat West, we will most likely access the area via a deep tunnel from the existing underground mine."

This will help to minimise disruption to local communities, he added.
In other recent news, Lake Victoria Mining announced that it had identified a large gold anomaly at its Karamela project in Tanzania.
