Gold-rush sketches a 'dramatic' history lesson

Wednesday, 24th September 2008 (295 views)

Sketches from an artist depicting the California gold rush of the 1800's are a "dramatic historic visualisation", it has been claimed.

The works of Daniel Wadsworth Coit captured a "significant event" in US history before the days of cameras, according to the Norwich Bulletin.

He had ventured into banking in San Francisco in the late 1840s which introduced him to the world of gold mining, the paper noted.

And he began sketching the scenes that developed around him as the gold rush swept the region, including buildings and landscapes.

Bancroft Library at the Berkeley campus of the University of California is now home to the "highly-valued" pencil drawings.

In 1848, a crew led by James Marshall found small gold nuggets while building a mill near Sacramento.

The discovery led to half a million people travelling to California in search of prosperity, according to the state's Resources Agency.
