Nanotechnology advancing at "breathtaking rate"

Tuesday, 23rd September 2008 (297 views)

Nanotechnology is breaking into many aspects of society at a "breathtaking rate", it has been claimed.

An article from ConsumerReports.org has highlighted the prominence of the nanotechnology field, which it predicts will be used in $2.6 trillion (£1.4 trillion) worth of products by 2014.

It outlines the way in which elements such as gold behave differently at nano-sized levels - and the uses this has in areas such as generating electricity or delivering medicine.

However, the site drew attention to claims that nanoparticles should have separate labelling and safety practices to their fully-sized counterparts in order to regulate the industry appropriately.

Meanwhile, another recent article - this time from IndustryWeek.com - has discussed the "growing importance of the technical uses of gold in modern day society".

It cited a report - Nanostructured Materials for the Biomedical, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Markets - that noted gold is one of four dominant substances that make up the majority of the nanotechnology market.
