Thursday, 28th August 2008 (3622 views) A new exhibition will open from August 31st in Elberta, Alabama reports the Mullet Wrapper.The show is entitled Shipwreck! Treasures from the SS Republic and will be held in the Baldwin County Heritage Museum. As part of the exhibit, visitors will be able to watch video footage of the shipwreck and see artefacts recovered from the ship, including a sample of the thousands of gold coins discovered. The SS Republic was discovered by Odyssey in August 2003. It sank in October 1865 while on a journey between New York and New Orleans. Odyssey Marine Exploration is currently in legal action with the Spanish government over the discovery of a Spanish shipwreck which was holding millions of dollars worth of gold coins. Peru has also joined the legal debate recently, claiming that the treasure onboard the Spanish ship came from the South American country. Odyssey said it would be interested to see if the colonised country had the legal rights to the coins.
