Gold jewellery was an essential item for all women in Shanghai during the 1930s, reports the Shanghai Daily.

According to journalist Nie Xin, gold jewellery used to be revered in China as more than something decorative.

She said the precious metal was also seen as a good luck charm, helping to bring in good fortune and protect the owner from evil.

Also, wearing a lot of gold jewellery was not considered to be excessive - in many cases it was deemed necessary to have a lot of gold on display.

Jiang Jinling, an 88-year-old resident of Shanghai, told Ms Nie that wearing gold was important for occasions such as weddings.

Ms Jiang said: "It not only showed people's wealth and social position, but also indicated respect for their hosts."

In other news, the world's largest gold bangle was unveiled earlier this month in India, reported the Economic Times.

Designed by Tata Gold Plus, the bracelet was made with 24 kg's of gold and measured six inches thick.
