Treasure trove found in Kent

Tuesday, 19th August 2008 (290 views)

A gold pendant that could be over 1,500 years old has been discovered in Kent.

The discovery was declared to be treasure after a British Museum expert estimated it to have dated from between 491 and 518 AD, KentOnline reports.

Andy Sales, a fort lift truck driver from Deal, has been a metal detecting enthusiast for 25 years and found the artefact in a field near Worth.

"I have found all sorts of stuff including Roman and Saxon broaches and coins but nothing that has been declared treasure trove before," he was quoted as saying.

Dr Gareth Williams told a coroner's court that the pendant was a coin featuring the image of Anastasius the First, a Byzantine emperor.

This week the Evening Standard reported that a pair of gold earrings and a gold ring, each as much as 2,500 years old, had been discovered in a tomb in Bulgaria.
