Solidarity Ring goes on displayMonday, 18th August 2008 (283 views) A gold ring created as a symbol of peace and unity is to be displayed at a festival in the Philippines.Weighing 1.5 kilograms, the Solidarity Ring is the biggest in the country and was produced using nuggets donated by local leaders, miners and traders last year, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports. It is usually kept under close guard in Compestela Valley but is being transported for public display at the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City, Mindanao. Compestela Valley tourism chief Christine Dompor explained that it is hoped the ring will help inspire peace on the volatile island. "With the political ripples now in Mindanao, we see the Solidarity Ring as a good statement on how our once-divided leaders set aside differences and helped in creating this wonderful piece," she was quoted as saying. Last week Olympic beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh had a scare when she lost her gold wedding ring during a match. It was eventually recovered by a volunteer with a metal detector.
