Gold panning at Carson City celebrationFriday, 15th August 2008 (340 views) Gold panning will take place at the Nevada State Museum this weekend as part of Carson City's 150th birthday celebrations.The gold sorting technique will be carried out for five hours alongside a host of other celebratory events, rgj.com reports. Events are set to focus on the city's founders, concentrating on the 150 years since Abe Curry, Frank Proctor, Jacob Musser and Benjamin Franklin officially bought most of the Eagle Valley, anticipating Nevada's creation as a state. The men's descendants have been tracked down to be invited to the event, organiser Maxine Nietz told the website. Carson City was founded in the boom days of mining, having been named for explorer Kit Carson. According to the 2000 census, there are 52,457 people in the city, with a population density of 366 people per square mile. It is situated in a high desert valley, roughly 4,730 feet (1,440m) above sea level.
