Gold is 'the most expensive food in the world'Thursday, 31st July 2008 (829 views) Edible gold leaf has been named the most expensive food in the world.According to a list complied by Fortune Small Business, edible gold leaf comes with a price tag of $15,000 (£7,549) a pound. In second place are white truffles which cost $6,000 a pound and caviar in third place at $1,500 a pound. Beluga caviar can reach up to £4,000 a pound. Gold leaf is so costly it is ten times more expensive than saffron, the fourth most expensive food item on the list. The report said: "Bakers and bartenders use the precious metal to make dazzling treats. For elaborate parties, people add gold sprinkles to glasses of champagne or signature martinis." According to ediblegoldleaf.co.uk, edible gold is non-toxic and is still used in Indian and Chinese medicine as a digestive and constitutional remedy.
