A man who went missing while searching for gold in Australia has been found alive, it has been confirmed.

Theo Rosmolder, a 52-year-old from Victoria, was looking for the yellow metal some 130 km north of Laverton, a town in western Australia, with his wife and four companions.

Concerns were raised about the gold hunter's wellbeing when he disappeared with no food or water on Friday.

But just after 11:00 local time on Tuesday, the man was found some ten km away from where his group had been looking for their fortune.

Barney Hutchinson, senior constable with Laverton police, said disappearances were rare among the hundreds of people who flocked to the town each week to search for the precious metal.

"Even while this search was on there were more people turning up to look for gold - some of them do get lucky," he told the Times.

Several gold rushes have occurred in Australia, including the Victoria gold rush in the middle of the 19th century.
