The importance of mining for gold and other natural resources has been highlighted by the president of the Ontario Mining Association (OMA).

On its website, the OMA reveals details of a letter sent from Chris Hodgson to premier Dalton McGuinty, surrounding plans for the future of the province's northern boreal forest.

Mining practices are founded on the protection of the environment and ecological conservation, Mr Hodgson pointed out.

He gave examples such as the woodland caribou study in Attawapiskat conducted by De Beers Canada to emphasise the contribution of mining organisations to land protection measures.

The OMA president also highlighted the work the industry has done to develop "productive and respectful relationships" with First Nations in Ontario, with more than 40 impact benefit agreements being signed.

He added: "The OMA believes that all those impacted by mining activity should benefit from the prosperity that the industry brings."

The OMA recently offered energy saving tactics for miners following its study, Implementing a Sustainable Compressed Air Leak Programme.
