Gold mine to open in ghost townMonday, 21st July 2008 (432 views) A company may reopen surface and underground gold mining operations near the Garnet Ghost Town, according to redOrbit.Exploratory drilling and surface testing was started by Grant Hartford at the site in June this year. Aaron Charlton, whose family owns the Garnet mining district suggested he may open old mines like the Lead King mine at the site as well as drilling new ones. He owns mining claims on mineral rights on over 3,000 acres around the area. Government officials said the company is obtaining the mining permits needed for mining operations, redOrbit said. In addition, Mr Charlton said any mining his company conducts will be respectful of the historical interests of the Garnet Preservation Association. To this end, redOrbit reports, Mr Charlton added he will open up a gold mine to be used as a tourist site. It will display old mining equipment, have interpretive signs and the area surrounding it will be reseeded. Garnet became a ghost town by the early 1900s when the population decreased from around 1,000 in 1898 to 150 in 1905.
