The community of Cayton in Scarborough recently honoured a gold-rush themed float at its 22nd annual gala.

According to the Scarborough Evening News, the village's week-long programme of celebratory events drew to a close on July 20th with a parade of floats.

Fighting off competition from pirate-themed floats and an attraction featuring roaring twenties fancy dress outfits, the gold rush float made by Cayton in Bloom was named the winner.

Les Hutchinson, chairman of Cayton in Bloom, told the news provider: "We're hoping for gold so we thought we would pan for gold!"

Mr Hutchinson, who built the float with Ron Smith, Ann Hodgson and Sylvia Beadnall, added that the gala was wonderful and evidence of the fact that Cayton is such a wonderful place to live.

The winning float was selected by Eileen Vickers, mayor of Scarborough, who described the gilded attraction as "so unusual".

Cayton in Bloom was the joint winner of the large village category at Yorkshire in Bloom last year.
