The Saudi Exhibition for Gold and Jewellery has put on display a selection of local and imported gold products in the Jeddah International Exhibition Centre.

Saleh Al-Turki, chairman of the Council Saudi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, officially opened the event over the weekend.

Bahrain, Italy, India and the United Arab Emirates have all contributed gold products to the exhibition.

Bisher Diab, World Gold Council's general manager of the Saudi Market and Gulf consultant, said sales were brisk and security at the location is high.

He said the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) and the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities have granted their cooperation in turning Jeddah into a Gate of Gold.

"Their aim is to initiate a huge project to localise gold and jewellery designs. They have been working on this project for five years now in cooperation with JCCI officials," Mr Diab said.

In addition, Mr Diab hinted the creation of a gold and jewellery making academy may also be "on the cards".

Jeddah is located on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia.
