Australia gold hotspot 'has more exploring to do'Wednesday, 9th July 2008 (307 views) A town in Australia is revisiting its gold rush past with a renewed excitement over mining.Gold was first found in Tennant Creek some 80 years ago, but the yellow metal is still creating a buzz in the central Northern Territory community, reports the Advertiser. Emmerson Resources is launching a number of mining projects in the town's gold fields, following its acquisition of former explorer Giants Reef's assets when the company went into administration in 2005, the report observes. Rob Bills, managing director of Emmerson Resources, told the newspaper that despite the town's gold rush heritage, its potential has not yet been fully explored, with just seven per cent of the drilling on the fields going deeper than 150 metres. "That's scratching the surface - we've got geophysics that can see down to 400 metres,'' he said. In 1936, Australia's then prime minister Joseph Lyons pronounced Tennant Creek as the site of "the most important goldfield in the Commonwealth", the town's official website reveals.
