The redevelopment of the former Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota as a science research science is guided by safety, a project leader has asserted.

Dr Jose Alonso, director of the Sanford Underground Laboratory, has commented that progress is developing more slowly than expected due to the prevalence of safety concerns, reports the Black Hills Pioneer.

"I want to make it absolutely clear that safety is the number one priority in everything we are doing in terms of access and in terms of monitoring and control of access," Dr Alonso said.

The Homestake Gold Mine stopped the process of mining for gold in 2002, before which it produced more than $1 billion (£500,000) in the precious metal.

Last year, it emerged that the National Science Foundation had selected the mine as the site of its Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory.

Dark matter researchers anticipate that the facility will be key to the development of the discipline.
