Rare jewellery has gone on display in Ranchi, India, according to the Telegraph in Calcutta.

The exhibition consisted of 400-year-old jewellery that once belonged to the royal family of Jaipur.

Patterned sheets of 23-carat pure gold were fused with a flat piece of coloured glass to create the thewa jewellery.

Designs on the jewellery include images of the king on an elephant.

According to the newspaper gold jewellery designed in this way was created in 1767 under the rule of Maharawat Samant Singh of Rajasthan.

Over 200 pieces of thewa jewellery will be on display.

Nalini Swarup, organiser of the exhibition, said: "This jewellery was confined to the four walls of the palaces of Jaipur.

"Through this exhibition we want to promote this exquisite range of jewellery."

In other news, a five-day exhibition of Indian gold jewellery is taking place in Chennai. Around 40 jewellers from across India are displaying at the show.
